Our Whelping house design has been thought out trough much trial & error over the years & have now finally got a layout that runs Efficiently, CLEANS well & THOROUGHLY! , Has its own septic system, sanitizing system & climate controlled whelping den area to keep moms & pups warm in winter & cool in summer.
The Dens are enclosed to be as much like the hole that mom would dig out in the wild, or a cave/den. This is natural & instinct for them & lessens stress especially if we happen to have more than one momma with pups at a time. They feel totally protected when in their den & thats what they look for when time to give birth. We put them in their den about 2 weeks prior to whelping so they can get accustom & comfortable in their mommy house.
They have galvanized, vented, doggie doors leading to 8' runs with 25lb galvanized feeders & auto waterers so moms can potty & stay nourished on demand . When its time, mom will start to teach her pups to eliminate outside the whelping den & pups will actually be using the doggy door themselves before they go to their new homes. The dens are also lined with removable pans for easy sanitizing.
We have done the in house whelping route with many issues but the biggest thing that made our decision to make a BIG change was an experience after a long rainy season that brought parvo to our surrounding area a couple years ago. When moms were in house, we would need to let them out to go potty & this in turn exposed them to the wet ground that had been flooded from the rains over time & brought the nasty, long living virus over into our yard. Then moms would come into nurse & it wasn't long before we were seeing sick pups! This was awlful & a HUGE game changer ! We were either gonna be done or take drastic measures to protect our future pups.
Our new design eliminates exposure to ground that could be contaminated by rains or other unforeseen element issues. It was a very very difficult time But God carried us through & showed us much we needed to learn & how to rebuild. Now we are very Blessed of the Strength God gave us to carry on!
We also made dietary changes for added protection which includes DE ( diatomaceous earth ) daily to pups once eating food along to help with the digestive tract & the gut. Parvo attacks the intestines & DE not only helps protect pup from parvo but we believe it saved a few of ours during our experience when added to other care.
Pics of the new set up coming soon !
Thank you for taking the time to read up on our whelping house layout & why we have chosen these options.
We have been blessed that we have gained much knowledge on how to properly protect & raise pups so we can deliver healthy happy pups to our wonderful clients.
